Also known as the maidenhair tree, it is a unique species of tree with no close living relatives. The word ginkgo in the Japanese language means "silver apricot" and apparently refers to the fruits. The ginkgo is a living fossil. Native to China, the tree is widely cultivated and introduced early in human history. Ginkgos are large trees, usually reaching a height of 20-35 m, with some specimens in China exceeding 50 m. The tree has an angular crown and long, somewhat irregular branches. Young saplings are often tall and slender, and sparsely branched. The crown becomes wider as the tree grows (aged 100 years or more). During autumn, the leaves turn golden and then fall, sometimes within a short period of time (one to 15 days). The leaves are divided into two characteristic lobes that bear a central incision in the middle and are fan-shaped, broad, with veins radiating out into the leaf blade, usually 5-10 cm long, but sometimes up to 15 cm.
