It is a genus, or group of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteroids. The nine species it contains are commonly called cone flowers. They are endemic to eastern and central North America. Echinacea species are herbaceous, drought tolerant, perennial plants that grow 140 cm tall. They have erect stems which in most species are branchless. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, usually hairy with a rough texture, having a layer of hairs, but sometimes they may be hairless. The flowers are in continuous bloom from June to late September, clustered together in single rounded heads terminating in long stalks, and resemble sunflower flowers with peripheral 8-21 tongue-like florets and the corollas are dark purple to pale pink, white or yellow. The generic name Echinacea has its roots in the Greek word ἐχῖνος (Echinos), meaning sea urchin, which refers to the sharp-prickly appearance and feel of the flower heads. The plant contains analgesic, antiseptic, antiviral and purgative properties that kill bacteria and fungi and strengthen the immune system, and improve its response to infections, as well as for skin diseases or lymphatic infections. Native Americans chewed the roots of this plant to relieve sore throats, toothaches and flu. It is used in cases of septicemia, acne, nasopharyngeal catarrh, pyorrhea, tonsillitis and especially in dothienias, nasal rashes and abscesses. The highest concentration of the herb's active substances is found in the black roots of the plant and these are the ones we mainly use.
