Cleavers, Galium, Goosegrass, are annual herbaceous plants of the Rubiidae family that are native to North America and Eurasia. It crawls along the ground and over the tops of other plants, attaching itself with the small hooked hairs that grow on the outside of the branches and leaves. Stems can reach up to 1m. or more, and are square. The leaves are simple, narrowly lanceolate to linear, and borne in whorls of six to eight. They have small, star-shaped, white to greenish flowers, which bloom from early spring to summer. The flowers are gathered in clusters of two or three, arranged in axillary bracts (born from the axils of the leaves). The globose fruits are found in clusters, and develop 1-3 seeds together, and are covered with hooked hairs that adhere to animal hair, helping to disperse the seeds, and are edible. They belong to the same family as coffee. Gallio fruits are often dried and roasted, then used as a coffee substitute. Modern herbalists use it as a lymphatic system stimulant and for urinary problems. It is also eaten as a vegetable (boiled). It is a useful booster of the immune system, and traditionally our people used this herb to treat wounds and ulcers as well as for its anti-cancer properties. According to one concept, gallium can soothe the pain of cancer. It has diuretic, antispasmodic properties and helps fight rheumatism. It is also used against moth.
