It has approx. 5-30 cm tall, with downy, scaly, elongated reddish stems, which develop in early spring before the leaves, with a head of yellow tongue-shaped flowers. The flowers are yellow, in an inflorescence (they look like a ladybug). The leaves of the stem are almost like round blades, deeply grooved and come out after it flowers. The fruit is achene. Grows in cool and moist clay-lime soils. It acts as an expectorant, emollient, antitussive, anticatarrhal and diuretic. It can be used for chronic or acute bronchitis, irritating cough, whooping cough and asthma. Its soothing expectorant action makes it useful in most respiratory problems, including chronic forms of emphysema. As a mild diuretic it has been used for cystitis.
