A wonderful healing herb is the tea of Olympus. It is a species of the plant Sideritis sp. (Athoa - Clandestina - Raeseri - Scardici - Euboea - Syriaca), widely known throughout Greece under the common name of Mountain Tea. Due to its high iron content, it is considered a powerful shield against colds and has anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, anti-thrombotic action. It is rich in flavonoids that shield the circulatory and cardiovascular system, and is the most popular Greek herb. It is found native in most mountainous and semi-mountainous parts of the Mediterranean.
In Greece we find it in most areas, such as:
in Pindos in Taugetos in Samothrace under the name Sideritis Athoa (mountain tea or Athos tea or Vlach tea or betonica), on Mount Olympus as a rare species at an altitude of over 1000 metres, in Pelion and Kissavos, under the name Sideritis Scardica (mountain tea, herb of the gods), The mountain tea is drunk as a hot decoction (pour boiling water on one or two sprigs and leave it for 3 to 5 minutes to bring out its aroma and therapeutic substances), or cold ( after letting it become a hot decoction, wait for it to cool down a bit and then whip it with ice cubes in a shaker. Serve plain, with honey, agave or maple syrup.)
