2.83

Plantain major, in the family Plantaginidae-Plantaginaceae. It flowers in spring and is named after the five ribs of its leaves. In Crete we find four varieties of the herb, which bear the name pentaeno. There are several species of pennyroyal that form a small family, to which the stonecrop and psyllium belong; it is a genus of 200 species of plants. It is also found as sparrow and little fanwort, plantain. It is a perennial herbaceous plant 10-50 cm tall, with large, dark green, lanceolate leaves on straight long flowering stems, with ear-like inflorescences and greenish-yellow flowers. It is very common in dry soils, on embankments and roadsides. But it is also found in boggy soils and standing water. The leaves are edible but a little tough, so we mainly pick the young, tender, fresh leaves and remove the stems. Their taste is bitter, like spinach. The leaves when dried make a good tea. The herb acts as an expectorant, emollient, astringent and diuretic. It has very interesting healing properties. It acts as a mild expectorant while soothing inflamed and irritated membranes. It is good for cough and mild bronchitis. Its astringency makes it beneficial for diarrhea, hemorrhoids and cystitis when bleeding is also present.
