The laudanum or ludanum or the ludanos is an aromatic resin with strong medicinal properties which is harvested from the leaves of the Cretan Cistus plant. It is black in colour, aromatic, has a bitter taste and is used, among other things, to produce an essential oil with a penetrating aroma. It dissolves completely and immediately in pure alcohol, giving a red alkaline solution. This aromatic resin has been used since ancient times against cholera plagues, as a perfume for incense, and in the embalming of the dead. It has astringent, heating, and emollient properties. Many sources mention the use of aladania resin as a patch for malignant sarcomas and its use in the preparation of ointment against hair loss.
