Gooseberry leaves, due to its astringent properties, are used for diarrhea, dysentery, infections of the bladder and the urinary system in general. Gooseberry is a genus of Dicotyledonous Angiosperm plants belonging to the Ericaceae order, Ericaceae family. The genus includes approximately 70 species found mainly in Central and North America. The species A. uva-ursi occurs in Greece. They are evergreen forest shrubs or small trees. The fruit is a rail or drupe and its color is red. Its name comes from the words "bear" and "grape" as it is an excellent bond for bears. Some species also have medicinal properties. The decoction of the leaves is used as a tonic, diuretic and against kidney and bladder diseases, while in Russia it is drunk as a tea called Caucasian tea. Its leaves are used in tanning. Finally, some of the species are cultivated as ornamental plants for their beautiful foliage and flowers.
