We find it in our country under the names licorice, regolitsa and aglycorice. The licorice plant is a legume that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not botanically related to anise, star anise, fennel, which are sources with similar aromatic compounds. Licorice is a perennial herbaceous plant or shrub, growing up to 1 m tall, with pinnate leaves about 7-15 cm long, with 9-17 leaflets. Flowers are 0.8-1.2 cm long, purple to bluish pale whitish produced in a lax inflorescence. The stems of the plant are vertical, ribbed, strong and fluffy. The fruit is an elongated pod, 2-3 cm long, contains some fruits, with a characteristic long, cylindrical, flexible and branched root that reaches 1-2 m. It grows best in deep valleys, well-drained soils, in full sun. It blooms in June and July. The underground parts are collected for medicinal purposes from March to the beginning of May before flowering, and in autumn after the leaves fall, but only species exceeds 3-4 years. It has a bittersweet taste and, together with ginger, they are considered one of the 2 oldest types of candy. It is anti-inflammatory, expectorant, emollient, antitussive, suitable for pneumonia, runny nose, bronchitis, and asthma.
