Salvia verbenoides , Elefax Jerobotonoides also known as Clary Sage or in Greek Wild Basil, Gorgoyannis, Verbena, Stavrovotano, Veronica, is native to the British Isles in the Mediterranean region of Southern Europe, North Africa, the Near East and the Caucasus. It is a tall perennial poa, with hairy stems and branches spreading vertically outwards. It can grow to 20 cm tall; the leaves at the base are large serrated green with many branches and a stem, typical of Salvia. It has soft purple and violet flowers in mid-summer. It flowers from June to September, and the seeds mature from July to October. The flowers are bisexual and are pollinated by bees. Some are closed-sexed and pollinate themselves. The plant is known for attracting pollinators. It prefers neutral and alkaline soils and needs full sun. Decoctions of its flowers are used against fever and neuralgia. It is considered a euphoric, sedative, tonic, diuretic, lactogenic, emmenagogue and antidiarrheal. Externally it is used as an antiseptic, healing and antispasmodic. The ancients valued it highly and considered it a panacea for all diseases. The roots of the plant can be eaten raw, and the leaves are edible. It is said to help eyesight in general. Also during the flowering period, it is a bee-keeping plant.
